We are looking for a resourceful, exceptionally skilled Vacuum Engineer, with a problem-solving mindset to design, build, experimentally optimize, operate, and maintain Renaissance Fusion (RF)’s vacuum systems. This cross-functional role addresses company-wide vacuum needs from High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) film deposition machines to liquid metal experiments and ultimately to stellarator experimental devices.
In this position you will share and develop your expertise with your colleagues as part of the Engineering as a Service (EAS) department.
The EAS team collaborates with RF’s different R&D teams providing highly skilled engineering services for the successful completion of the RF Project. The Vacuum technology group is part of the EAS department. You will directly report to the Vacuum Technology Group Leader.
Responsibilities
Design
Work closely with the different RF teams to understand the multi-disciplinary requirements (chemical, electric, magnetic, thermal etc.) to project and adapt the vacuum system accordingly
Collaborate with the mechanical engineers on the final design of different installations in preparation for the manufacturing and subsequent installation, ensuring that vacuum requirements are met
Ensure deliverables are produced according to project schedule, quality, and budget
Manufacturing, Assembly, and Testing
Propose technical solutions for components, materials, welding techniques, sealing systems, instrumentation, required qualification work, and fabrication/assembly techniques
Play a key role in the assembly of under-vacuum experiments, such as installing vacuum components on vacuum chambers
Perform vacuum tests of components, alone or in collaboration with colleagues; confirm that sub-assemblies and systems meet the previously agreed vacuum objectives
Perform detailed analysis of pumping characteristics and efficiency for HTS film deposition machines, liquid metal experiments and stellarator experimental devices
Technical Documentation
Other
Work with the purchasing team to find suppliers and source parts for customized installations
Work with supplier to identify and modify vacuum components for ultra-high vacuum, special vapours and liquid metals, and special geometries.
Develop, under the leadership of your group leader, your skills and experience for the benefit of different RF projects
Requirements
Don't hesitate to apply even if you don't match all the requirements. Superheroes don't exist, but people with passion and talent do.
Education and professional experience
Bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in engineering / vacuum field or other relevant discipline
8+ years of hands-on professional experience in vacuum technology
3+ years professional experience in setting specifications, installing and operating large, complex vacuum systems under demanding condition
First experience or/and willingness to learn transversal management in R&D or/and industrial environments
