We are looking for an inspiring and enthusiastic Liquid Metal Magnetohydrodynamics experiments Group leader (LMMHD GL) to manage the activities of the LMMHD experiments group and supervise the sustainability and control of thick, gravity-defying, free-surface liquid metal flows in dedicated experiments and eventually inside the stellarator. This includes the production of innovative alloys and components such as special pumps for in-house experiments and, eventually, for production and sales.
Responsibilities
Design, experiments & analysis
- Lead the internal design and construction of liquid metal MHD experimental setups, focusing on the MHD aspect (such as MHD diagnostics, liquid metal control systems, liquid metal pumping…)
- Provide and process feedback to/from the LM engineering team to translate high-level science requirements into buildable, yet relevant rigs
- Technically specify parts to be outsourced (off-the-shelf and custom-made), testing equipment, raw materials, and consumables. Make the final decisions on their purchase within the budget endowment of the position, or consult/escalate when appropriate within time and budget
- Propose, plan and lead equipment testing, major LMMHD experiments and smaller ancillary experiments, as needed
- Collaborate with material science team to implement in LMMHD experiments lessons learned and best practices for high temperature liquid metal operation (corrosion, H permeation, health and safety…)
- Collaborate with numerical team to predict and interpret experimental results
- Identify and pursue potential business development opportunities of liquid metal technologies in agreement with head of LM, head of business and CTO
Team management
- Be the ambassador of Renaissance Fusion's vision within his/her team, and promote its culture, values (speed, simplicity, fantastic realism, constructive interference and unified force) and policies.
- Encourage collaboration at all levels of the organization.
- Ensure that his/her team is motivated to achieve its objectives.
- Take an active role in talent development.

Scientific outcome
- Coordinate the writing, review and approval of patents and scientific papers.
- Prepare scientific reports (presentations, posters, etc.) and represent Renaissance Fusion to scientific conferences and workshops.
- Remain on the lookout for any scientific developments in his/her field of expertise.
Ideal profile
Education and professional experience
- PhD or Master’s degree + equivalent experience in physics, nuclear, chemical or electrical engineering, materials science or related field
- 8+ years of experimental research experience in one or more of the following topics: fluid dynamics, electrical engineering, metallurgy, control engineering
- 3+ years of experience as a technical leader/coordinator and/or project management is a plus
- Research experience in magnetohydrodynamics of plasmas and/or liquid metals and in multi-phase and/or multi-component flows is a plus
Languages
- Fluent in English (C1/C2).
- Knowledge (B1 or higher) of French is a plus.
Technical skills
- Mastery of electromagnetism, heat transfers and fluid dynamics
- Working knowledge in computational fluid dynamics, Python, Matlab or other programming language
